突然很想看温源宁的八卦书Imperfect Understanding,用Almighty google搜索，未果。

只得看看另一位当年的LLM：杨绛的《回忆我的父亲》，网路上到处都是，随便看。

总结一下，我对杨荫杭（1878—1945）先生如下几件事情感兴趣：

1) 准放任自流式地教育子女;

2) 不识时务地得罪大官;

3) 与妻子推让生死;

4) 他在宾大那篇中式英文LLM毕业论文

5) 他购置的“大而无当”的住宅。

1。詹姆士大院：大卫-休谟的故居。他思想前卫，不拘一格，天生的无拘无束；他宽厚待人，温文尔雅，被朋友们称作St. David。他身体不太好， 可能缺乏体育锻炼。 

2。博斯维尔大院：好哥们博斯维尔，当年招待约翰逊博士的地方。现在仍是一个温馨小酒吧。有好酒好菜，约翰逊博士编起英文字典来可就有劲了--美味字典。

博斯维尔也曾就读于爱大法律系。他的故事再一次告诉我们：做律师是没有前途的，一门心思写八卦才是正途！

3。1786年，会写诗的乡下人罗伯特-彭斯第一来到爱丁堡，住在思黛雅女士胡同（Lady Stair's Close）的东翼。 

    沿蒋彝足迹，在下按图索骥，随便走访了附近几处地方，也算是实践了一把“知识考古”。

    就是在这里，蒋先生遇到了那位笑哈哈的大胡子爷爷。此次不期之遇，《爱丁堡哑行者》用了一个章节的篇幅来发挥——Chapter 4: Unexpected Informations （小声地问一句，这里information为啥用复数呀？）

    大声地说：我拍100张照片，也抵不上蒋先生1幅图画来的传神！

顺便公布弥乐斯大院的真面目

年初，爱丁堡的John Reid先生扔给我一本书。“去看看吧，等功课闲了,不妨读读，”老头笑呵呵的说。

我取了书，却原来是20世纪四五十年代大红大紫的游记作家蒋彝的著作！这个江西人蒋彝（Chiang Yee，1903-1977）是著名书画家，曾在英国伦敦大学和美国哥伦比亚大学担任教授。

蒋先生的游学生活令人好生羡慕。一个一文不名的书生，放着好端端的芜湖县县长不做，愣是背挎行囊，单枪匹马来到欧洲行走列国。他边走边记，边记边画，转动一枝矫健画笔指点江山。

先说一则八卦。Cocacola公司当年为自己征集中文商标名，颇费脑筋。后来得蒋彝大笔一挥，写下“可-口-可-乐”四个大字，实在是神来之笔。他由此得润笔之资30美元。据说Cocacola先前有个译名叫做“蝌蝌啃蜡”，且不说呆笨之极，这个“什么什么蜡”的怪东西听着就是倒肠倒胃。 然而，“可口可乐”得以摆脱味同嚼“蜡”的命运，四个字当中的玄妙，却也非一般老外所能体会。Cocacola公司以区区几十美元购得这个中文名字，实在是占了一个狠狠的大便宜。

蒋彝不是英语语文的大师，他的英语是成年以用功勤习的。不过他的英语写作却由此绝少雕琢，清健质朴；这可能也是数十本游记广受西方人欢迎的缘故吧。这些文名，使得他在英美人心目中虽然够不上家喻户晓，却也有一知半解的魔力。美国Suffolk大学的英文系Da Zheng教授，曾讲到过1949年5月7日《爱丁堡新闻晚报》（Edinburgh Evening News）上有一则智力问答题：“爱丁堡的哑行者是谁”？ 答案是：蒋彝。

回过头来想，知道蒋彝的中国读者却少了很多。这可能是他的书多用英语写成，而绝少中译本的缘故。 赵毅衡先生提到一个中译本：

我手中的这本叫做《哑行者在爱丁堡》（The Silent Traveler in Edinburgh），1948年第一次出版， 2003年再版，书尾有隶书题写的“记爱丁堡画”的中国字样。上午去Waterstone书店，发现这本书居然还是放在“苏格兰”栏目下的显赫位置，大概是蒋先生的中国画法的巍巍城堡下王子街公园的封面实在惹人喜爱的缘故吧。

蒋彝有一种独特的本事，他的写作就好像画画那样，不经意的抹抹涂涂，便可把当地的风物人情的勾勒个大概。仔细再看，却也没有用什么华丽的词藻。

举例而言，蒋彝是如何写一般苏格兰人的呢？他就写一个苏格兰老人的“笑”——那种通心彻肺的开怀大笑。蒋彝到了爱丁堡时，天气似乎并不很好，雾蒙蒙的，又下着些雨。不过他依然兴致勃勃，要在这个美丽而陌生的地方四处走走。那天他一个人信步来到皇哩路(Royal Mile) 上的高街区（High Street）。快到圣贾尔斯大教堂了，他却被一个形状怪异却雕刻精美的石墩吸引住了。这是什么呢？蒋先生百思不得其解。

“那是墨卡特十字座（Mercat Cross）”，身后一个粗犷的声音突然响起。蒋彝转身一瞧，原来是一位蓄着大大胡子的苏格兰老者正看着他。他对这位老人的胡子印象实在太深刻了，那根根竖起髭须简直盖住了整个鼻子以下的部位。那老人显然是从街面的另一头特意跑过来的。接着，他滔滔不绝给这位远方来客介绍起苏格兰地方掌故来。老人还自豪地说，自己年轻时也去过中国的好些地方呢，包括上海和汉口。“从上海坐船到汉口，必经九江；要知道九江可就是我出生的地方呀，”这下蒋彝也来劲了，“你一定是路过我的出生地的！”老人听罢大笑。蒋彝以前听人说，苏格兰人很古板，一般不易发笑，除非你提到小时候的趣事才能逗乐他们。无论这是真是假，这次老人的确是笑如巨咆（roared with laughter）。苏格兰人的真诚和豪爽可见一斑。

看蒋彝的书，另一个有趣味之处。他是完全是以一个中国人的眼睛去采纳当地风景的。爱丁堡人瞧亚瑟王座山象头猛狮；可蒋彝说这是当地人眼光差劲，那山分明是一头温文尔雅的大象嘛。有诗为证：

不是很高明的诗，却也调皮可爱。

更绝的是，蒋彝把英国法官和律师出庭要戴的头套，叫做“假头”（false head）。“正义原来要用假头来象征，好玩好玩!”（I am still amused that the symbol of justice is a false head!）他由此讲了一个１８世纪住在爱丁堡白耳胡同（Byers’Close）寇斯多大人（ Lord Coalstoun）的“假头”被小猫叼走的小插曲。他为这则八卦亲手配了插图：一只小猫咪垂在绳子上，下边有一个官老爷秃着脑袋，眼巴巴看着自己的“假头”被擒在猫爪子里，不知道当是怒还是笑。看蒋先生的画笔，实在让人忍俊不禁。
